CBD

What is it?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant.

CBD does not make you high.

Most CBD is extracted from hemp, a variety of cannabis that has only a trace amount of THC, the compound that gets you high.

CBD is emerging as a promising treatment for pain, inflammation, seizures, and anxiety without the psychoactive effects of THC.

How does it help improve / prevent me from getting arthritis?

CBD is thought to work by regulating inflammatory and pain sensing systems in our bodies.

CBD also interacts with the newly discovered endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors that interact with CBD-like molecules produced by our own bodies.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating many functions in the body, including metabolism, appetite, mood, anxiety, and pain perception.

Some people with arthritis who have tried CBD report noticeable pain relief, sleep improvement and anxiety reduction.

Has it been tested?

  • An animal study suggested that CBD has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties in arthritis, but these effects have not yet been confirmed in human studies
  • A 2018 study suggested that synthetic CBD was effective for osteoarthritis knee pain

How much do I need to take?

CBD products can be taken orally, applied to the skin or inhaled.

Medical experts consulted by the Arthritis Foundation recommend starting with 1-2 mg of oral CBD twice daily.

If relief is inadequate after one week, increase the dose by that same amount.

If needed, go up in small increments over several weeks.

If you find relief, continue taking that dose twice daily.

Does it have any side effects?

Research evaluating the safety of CBD is currently underway.

No serious safety concerns have been associated with moderate doses of CBD so far.

As with any supplement, it’s best to talk with your healthcare provider before adding CBD to your diet.

Is there anything else I need to know?

CBD products derived from hemp are legal.
