What is it?

Passiflora edulis, commonly known as the passion fruit vine, is a plant commonly found in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.

An extract made from the peel of the passion fruit is commonly taken for a variety of health conditions including hypertension and asthma.

How does it help improve / prevent me from getting arthritis?

Passion fruit peel is rich in pigments called bioflavonoids.

Laboratory studies have found that some bioflavonoids have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants inactivate harmful free radicals in your body which can cause disease.

Free radicals are constantly being formed in your body through processes like exercise or inflammation. You may also be exposed to free radicals in the environment from sources such as cigarette smoke and pesticides.

The exact role of free radicals in arthritis is not fully understood.

It is thought that free radicals damage or kill chondrocytes, the cells responsible for making sure joint cartilage remains healthy.

Passion fruit peel extracts have also been shown to inhibit metalloproteinases (MMPs), proteins involved in the destruction of cartilage.

Am I getting this already from my diet?

Passion fruit peel is inedible and may contain chemicals that are poisonous to your body when consumed in large amounts.

As a result, we would strongly recommend purchasing a processed passion fruit peel extract rather than consuming the peel directly.

Has it been tested?

  • A 2017 analysis comparing 20 natural supplements for osteoarthritis found that passion fruit peel extract had a large effect in reducing pain in the short term (≤3 months)
  • A 2020 analysis comparing 33 natural supplements for osteoarthritis found that medium term (10-20 months) supplementation with passion fruit peel extract led to large improvements in pain, stiffness and physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis
